Saturday, June 20, 2009

By Terry Gene Hembree, Visitor Productions

The Nathan and Sandy Mirdamadihat wedding that was recently held at the
Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center
Was one of our most Extreme' decorated events

Close to 1,000 people packed the Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center
For the Traditionl Celebration Events of the day that took place on Saturday, June 20, 2009
The Wedding Ceremony was officiated by a Mexican Priest as the new couple shared their vowes and became
Mr. Nathan and Mrs. Sandy Mirdamadi

A catered meal was then served to the invited guests and family

Table seating for close to 600 guests was decorated with Gold and Silver Fine China, Sterling Silver Tableware
Crystal Stemware with Water Glasses, Toasting Glasses, Dinner Drink Glasses and imprinted Shot Glasses
Fresh Cut Long Stem Red Roses sat upon each table setting along with the
Cut Glass and Crystal Vases filled with Calli Lillies
White Linen Tablecloths with Red Silk Overlays sat the scene for the Bride's color of choice
Four separate dining areas was created in the large Joe H. Burtrum Hall of the Convention Center,
with the Bride and Groom's table centered with Gold Accented seating

The meal was served to each guest at their designated seating with
the Traditional Toast to the new couple while a Four Piece Quartet played during the dining period

The Wedding Cake was served out of a decorated Gazebo to the right of the stage
that featured the well know Mexican Musicians Bandadejerez that played live throughout the evening

After the Bride and Groom's Dance the doors opened to the guests and un-invited guests
as the evening's Celebration continued with a Dancing and Drinking Fiesta

As 1:00 a.m. drew close the Bride and Groom were separated in yet another Mexican Tradition
and both separately continued their celebration apart form each other

As Sunday arose at the Convention Center, the Bride and Groom were reunited
along with the couple's families' as they held a private family reunion and Brunch
before heading off to the airport and highways to return to they're respective homes

Nathan and Sandy have chosen Jamaica for their Honeymoon destination and the start of their new lives together

Nathan and Sandy Mirdamadi

The Chesnut - Kellogg Reception

May 9, 2009
Adam Chesnut
Son of Judd & Ann Chesnut

Daughter of Tim & DeAnn Kellogg

By Terry Gene Hembree, Visitor Productions

The Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center was very pleased to be chosen for the Chesnut - Kellogg Reception

Despite Joplin being hit by a massive hurricane like storm the day before the scheduled reception, the families and event decorator's arrived and began they're transformation while the Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center's owner frantically raced around trying to get temporary lighting hooked up by generators and some creative wiring

The twinkle lights were hoisted to the ceiling as well as the assorted sized balls that appeared to be floating in mid air.

With only two strips of lights providing lighting that continually went dim and then bright and then dim again, the folks that decorated were damned if they were going to cancel the soon to be husband and wife's special evening with their friends and family as they celebrated their committment in life.

Just about the time the wedding started across town the lights began to flicker and came on just in time for the guests to begin arriving while Joe went around straightening tables and decorations that didn't look exactly straight and uniformed as they were created in the cave like lighting the night before

The large hall of the center was decorated just beautiful and the guests were very surprised when they arrived for the reception Saturday evening on May 9, 2009 as most expected to have the event in the dark

Among the decorations were lit candles, beautiful floral arrangements, a unique candy table, cake and toasting table, a special Little Debbie individual cake piece wall and of course the mom and dad tables, wedding party tables and groom and bride table.

The guests were served a fantastic meal of smoked brisket, baked beans, slaw, sliced bread and pink lemonaid while the DJ provided a light show and played the requested tunes

"When folks walk into the large hall here at Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center when they are scheduling an event, they are usually over whelmed by the grandure in size of the space they will be resurrecting for they're special occassion," stated Joe Burtrum owned and operator of the center.

"With they're determination decorating while the emergencies continued due to the straight winds that left the city of Joplin with out electric, we all worked hand in hand to insure that the new couple's special day would go off as scheduled," Joe added as he began taking the generators and wiring harnesses' and such down to end the days excitement.

One thing I have to say, in the 35 years plus of being in the marketing and advertising business, Joe Burtrum was able to make a scheduled event that anyone else in the area would have canceled the day prior due to the loss of power, he made it happen, saying with a smile... "The show must go on!"

The wording I'm sure he heard throughout his growing up from his father the greatest car salesman of the four state area, High Dollar Joe Burtrum... the almost circus or vaudville style of beating the other dealer's in the area's prices by unique sales events and marketing schemes that just blew away the competition.

From car sales to making memories for many different occassions from weddings and receptions to trade shows, auctions, Mexican celebrations, anniversary parties to anything where the public need a large area to entertain, sell, teach, preach or just gather for a unique occassion.

The Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center is what was needed here in Joplin 35 years ago when businessman and entreprenuer Jack Webb built the convention center that continues to be the finest source of such a need in today's market!

Congratulations to the new Mr. & Mrs. Adam Chesnut, and to Joe Burtrum for a job well done!

The Show Must Go On!

"Blast From The Past" Performers Celebrate 25th Anniversary
"Friends Of The Blast" Appreciation Reunion Party

By Terry Gene Hembree, Visitor Productions

The Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center was very pleased to be chosen as the home of this years "25th Annual Blast From The Past" named the 'Friends Of The Blast Reunion

Earlier this year the St. John’s Mercy Regional Foundation, said they were "discontinuing the event indefinitely because of the economic challenges facing individuals and businesses."

Treva Kennedy, president and chief executive officer of the St. John's Reginal Health Center Foundation made the press release stating “It wasn’t an easy decision to make... The overall thing we had to look at was that economic conditions globally are not in good shape. Several businesses in the area have had to make very hard decisions, and we’re no exception.”

The staff of the annual production gathered and each performer put their own money into producing this weekends tribute to the performers, helpers and everyone that has assisted over the years pulling off the Blast From The Past which was titled the "Friends Of The Blast Reunion"

This tribute event was held at the Jack Lawton Webb Convention Center and was an absolute success with over 300 in attendance despite the snow, sleet and threatening weather conditions and reports.

The annual Blast From The Past unofficially started in 1978 with the event called the "Mash Bash," where hospital staff members dressed up like characters from the television show “MASH” and met at the old armory for a costume contest.

The event featured 250 to 300 hospital staff members and community residents dressing up and putting on a musical floor show with some kind of retro theme, later being named "The Blast From The Past," fund-raiser that has annually attracted 2,000 to 3,000 people a year over a four-night run.

Last year's event was shortened from two weekends to one due to the drop in ticket sales, but the energy and dedication of the performer's of the event remained at 100% as was demonstrated this past weekend.

The audience was treated to ten fantastic skits featuring the annual well-known Blast' performers, with other video and memories including a memorabilia table of related photos, etc.

A live DJ was on hand to treat the guests to the familiar 50's music for they're dancing pleasure, great food was also on hand throughout the evening.

In tradition of the most awaited event in the Joplin area, this years 'Friends Of The Blast Reunion' became an exclusive '25th Year Anniversary Friends Of The Blast Reunion Party' for the performer's, production crew, supporters and avid regulars that have come over the past 24 year's to support this great production, cause and great evening of entertainment.

Special thanks to St. John's Reginal Health Center Foundation for sponsoring the annual event and a Special thanks to Judy Love who recently retired from the Mercy Foundation, she volunteered tireless devotion and inspiration in producing the "Blast From The Past" all these years and to the stage-crew members, technicians and the hundreds of floor-show cast members, and other volunteers who helped year after year to make the floor shows and the event a quality production and success.

For further information, support of continued shows and offers to volunteer in putting on the event in 2010 may email: friendsoftheblast@yahoo.com
